Eighteenth Century micromosaic Duck in a spongeware surround.

Eighteenth Century micromosaic Duck in a spongeware surround.

The art of micromosaic developed in Rome in the eighteenth century, having been inspired by the discovery of Pompei  in 1748 and a particularly beautiful mosaic that was uncovered at Hadrian’s Villa in 1737. This beautiful mosaic, called The Capitoline Doves inspired the mosaicists of the Eighteenth Century to create remarkably complex and finely executed micromosaics of animals and views of the Roman Forum. This set of four Ducks was created by Giaccomo Raffaelli, who was one of the most famous mosaicists of the period and they represent micromosaic work at its finest and most beautiful.
